Chapter 18 of "Growing Up"

The next night :

"Lindsay hurry up!" Donna yelled as she banged on the bathroom door.

"I am!" Lindsay yelled back. "I'll be right out!"

Donna sighed and walked back down the hall to her room. She glanced at the clock and groaned. She had exactly 36 minutes to take a shower, get dressed, dry her hair, put on her makeup, and wrap Ike's birthday present.

"I'm out!" Lindsay called from down the hall.

"Finally," Donna muttered as she ran down the hall, past Lindsay, and into the bathroom. She quickly took a shower and dried her hair. When she was finished with her makeup, Donna rushed out of the bathroom and into her bedroom. Lindsay was sitting on the floor flipping through a magazine.

"What time is it?" Donna asked as she opened her closet door.

"6:53," Lindsay replied.

"Shit," Donna said. She grabbed Ike's present out of the closet and ran out of her room. She pounded down the stairs and into the den. She looked through the drawers of the desk until she found wrapping paper, scissors, and tape. She quickly wrapped Ike's present.

"Lindsay come on!" Donna called as she carried the present with her back up to her room. "We have to go," she said as she entered her room.

"Do I look okay?" Lindsay asked, standing up. Donna looked at the outfit Lindsay had picked out. Lindsay was wearing a black mini skirt, a red velvet tank top, and black heels.

"Umm...Linds?" Donna said. "You know it IS November, right? It's like 40 degrees outside. You're going to freeze!"

"Don't worry," Lindsay said. "I have a coat." She motioned to Donna's bed, and Donna saw a black coat lying there.

"Oh okay," Donna said. "Then you look great. How about me?" Donna had chosen tight black pants, a long sleeved, shiny blue shirt, and black shoes. She had dried her hair straight, and left it down. Lindsay gave her a thumbs-up.

"Okay then," Donna said. "Get your jacket and let's go." Donna went downstairs, and Lindsay followed her. After putting on her corduroy jacket, Donna and Lindsay left the house. They walked across the front lawn and over to the Hanson's house. Donna smoothed a wrinkle in her jacket and ran her fingers through her hair a few times as they approached the front door. Lindsay knocked on the door, and Diana answered.

"Hi girls," she said. "Come on in."

"Thanks," Donna said as she and Lindsay stepped inside.

"You girls are the first ones here," Diana said with a smile. "The boys are getting ready. You can go on up."

"Okay," Donna said with a smile. "Thanks." Donna placed the present on the dining room table, and motioned Lindsay to follow her up the stairs. Donna and Lindsay walked up the stairs and down the hall to the guys bedroom. The door was closed, so Donna knocked lightly.

"Who's there?" Zac called.

"The Men in Black," Donna replied sarcastically. "Can we come in?"

"Sure," Isaac called. "The door's open." Donna pushed open the door and entered the room, Lindsay following close behind.

"Hey Jess!" Donna exclaimed when she saw Jess sitting on the bed.

"Hey Donna!" Jess exclaimed. "And...Lacey?"

"Lindsay," Lindsay said.

"Oops, sorry!" Jess said.

"No problem," Lindsay said. Donna walked up to Isaac and gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

"Happy Birthday!" she exclaimed.

"Thanks!" Isaac said with a smile.

"Ahem," Taylor said. Donna rolled her eyes and grinned.

"Excuse me Ike," she said, walking over to Taylor. "Tay needs attention." Donna hugged Taylor tightly and gave him a quick kiss on the lips.

"Thanks," he said smiling.

"Anything for you," Donna said as she sat beside Jess. "So when is everyone else coming?"

"I told everyone 7:00," Isaac said. Donna nodded and lay back on the bed.

"Tired?" Taylor asked.

"Exhausted," Donna replied.

"So where's my present?" Isaac asked. Donna sat up and gasped.

"I KNEW I forgot something!" she exclaimed as she slapped her forehead. Zac snickered and Isaac looked at her sadly.

"You forgot my present?" he asked. Donna could hold in her laughter.

"Of course not," she said giggling. "It's downstairs." Isaac got up to leave the room.

"Stop right there," Jess said running over to him and grabbing his arm. "You have to wait for everyone else to come."

"Oh come on," Isaac said, putting his arms around her. "Please?" Jess and Donna shook their heads.

"No way," Donna said. Jess pulled Ike back over to the bed and they sat down. Taylor walked over and Donna moved over so he could sit down. He smiled and put his arm around her. Lindsay looked at the two couples with jealousy, and Zac looked at them with amusement. He looked over at Lindsay and snickered at her expression.

"Boy if looks could kill," he muttered.

"What did you say?" Ike asked.

"Nothing," Zac said with a grin.

"So Lindsay," Isaac said stretching out on the bed. "When are you going to go back to New Jersey?"

"You trying to get rid of her Ike?" Jess asked as she playfully poked him in the stomach. "She just got here!"

"Hey lay off," Isaac complained. "I was just trying to make friendly conversation.

"I'm leaving on Wednesday," Lindsay said quietly.

"Oh," Isaac said.

"Well, that's umm...interesting." "Fascinating," Taylor added.

"Guys!" Jess said in an exasperated voice. "Lay off! Don't mind them Lindsay. They're not good conversationalists." She smiled at her.

"Hey!" Taylor exclaimed. Jess gave him a look and he shut up.

"So Lindsay," Jess said. "Do you have a boyfriend back home?" Lindsay glanced at Isaac.

"No," she replied. "I did for a few months, but we broke up."

"Oh that's too bad," Jess said.

"How long have you and Isaac been going out?" Lindsay asked.

"Oh....for a few months," Jess replied. "Not much longer than these two lovebirds here," she said, motioning to Taylor and Donna.

"That's nice," Lindsay said in a bored voice. Isaac sat up and looked at his watch.

"7:00 on the dot," he said. As if on cue, the doorbell rang. "Come on guys," he said, pulling Jess up. Zac and Lindsay followed Isaac and Jess out of the room, and Donna went to follow them, but Taylor took her hand and pulled her back.

"Wait," he said. "I want to tell you something." Donna sat back down.

"What is it?" she asked.

"I just wanted to tell you that you look really nice tonight," he said. Donna grinned.

"Thank you," she said. "You don't look too bad yourself." Taylor smiled and leaned over. He kissed Donna lightly on her lips, and Donna put her arms around his neck.

"Guys!" an exasperated voice said. Donna pulled away from Taylor and saw Isaac standing at the bedroom door. "I should have known you two would have been up here making out," he said with a sly grin. "That happens LATER!"

"Shut up Ike," Taylor muttered, blushing furiously. Donna and Isaac laughed.

"Come on Tay," Donna said as she took his hands and pulled him up. Isaac shook his head and smiled. Taylor dropped one of Donna's hands, but held tightly to the other. The three went back downstairs to greet the rest of the guests.
