Chapter 22 of "Growing Up"

3 weeks later :

Donna walked around aimlessly. The Hanson family had been gone for nearly three weeks. Isaac, Taylor, and Zac had gone to LA with their family to record their new single and new album. But they were supposed to come home that day. Donna fell onto her bed and closed her eyes. She heard a dog barking in the distance and a kid laughing. She drifted off to sleep. A phone rang in her dream. Donna ran around in a large plane, looking for the phone. Suddenly, she saw a huge fireball rushing towards her.

"AAAAAAH!!" Donna shrieked and sat up in her bed. Her clothes were damp with sweat. She slowly became aware that the phone was ringing. Donna stumbled across the room and picked up the phone.

"Hello?" she said, out of breath.

"Donna?" Taylor asked on the phone. "You sound like you just ran a marathon! Are you okay?" Donna took a few deep breaths.

"Yeah Tay," she said. "I'm fine. What's up? Wait! What time is it?" Donna looked across the room at her alarm clock and saw that it was 8:46 p.m..

"Jeez I slept for a long time!" she exclaimed.

"Donna!" Taylor said laughing. "I have great news!"

"What is it?" Donna asked. "We've been nominated for a Grammy!" Taylor exclaimed.

"Oh my God!" Donna screamed. "That is awesome! Congratulations!"

"Thanks!" Taylor said. "And I would like to know if you would be my date." Donna gasped.

"Seriously?" she asked.

"Seriously," Taylor said. "So...what do you say?"

"I say I would love to be your date," Donna said happily.

"Great!" Taylor said. "Okay, we're leaving for Las Vegas the day after tomorrow. And we're supposed to get dressed up, so do you have a dress?"

"I have the perfect one," Donna said with a smile.

"Okay cool," Taylor said. "I have to go eat, so I'll call you later, okay?"

"Okay," Donna said.

"Love you," Taylor said.

"Love you too," Donna said. "Bye!"

She hung up the phone and looked around her room.

"May as well go back to sleep," she said. Donna quickly changed into a T-shirt and boxer shorts, and crawled back under the covers. She slowly drifted back off to sleep.

The next morning, Donna awoke with a smile on her face. "MMMBop" was playing on her radio alarm clock. She turned up the volume and began to sing along. After the song was over, Donna shook her head.

"It's hard to believe that after a year I STILL love that song."

"That was those three hit-making brothers that call themselves Hanson," the DJ said. "And you can catch Hanson along with other various artists Friday night at the Grammy's, so don't miss it! Coming up this hour we have Puff Daddy, Jewel, the Backstreet Boys, Fiona Apple, and much more so keep it tuned to tuned to 104.6."

Donna got up and walked over to her closet. She opened the door, pulled her suitcase out, and threw it on her bed. Then, after realizing she had no idea how long she was staying in Las Vegas, Donna picked up the phone and called Taylor.

"Hello?" a groggy voice answered.

"Good morning sunshine!" Donna said teasingly.

"Oh come on," Taylor said. "Have some respect! It's....what time is it?" Donna laughed and glanced at the clock.

"It's 10:30 in the morning Taylor," she said. "And it seems to me that SOMEONE forgot to call me last night."

"Hey now," Taylor protested. "I did! You just chose not to pick up the phone."

"I guess I was asleep," Donna said. "Mom always said I could sleep through anything."

"Well I left a message," Taylor said. Donna reached over and pressed the Play button on her answering machine.

"You have seven messages," the machine said.

"Seven!" Donna said incredulously. The machine beeped, and the first message began to play.

"Hey Donna. This is Tay. I'm calling you back, obviously, so call me back when you get this k? Okay bye." Donna laughed.

"You sound good on my machine," she said into the phone. The next message began to play.

"Oh yeah. I forgot to say I love you. Bye!"...."Donna? Did you die or something? Bye....Or are you asleep? If you are, WAKE UP!!! Okay, bye....Are you awake yet? I guess not, considering you didn't pick up the phone. Okay, bye...Donna wake up! Come on! Hey you know what? This is the sixth time I have called you in the last ten minutes! Isn't that cool? Well, maybe not. Okay bye....This is the last message, I promise. Umm...call me when you wake up, and I'll talk to you later. I love you! Bye!" the messages stopped playing.

"End of messages," the machine said. Donna burst out laughing. She heard Taylor laughing on the other end.

"You are so weird," she said.

"Thanks," Taylor said. "What can I say? I was bored!"

"Whatever," Donna said. "Anyway...I forgot to ask you, what time are we leaving tomorrow, and how long are we staying?"

"Umm....I know Dad wants to leave early, but you know that never happens with this family. So I say you should come over around 9:00. And we're coming home on Wednesday. Okay?" Taylor said.

"Sounds good," Donna said. "Oh by the way," Taylor began. "Is this all right with your mom?" Donna rolled her eyes.

"I kind of didn't ask her," she said.

"Donna!" Taylor exclaimed. "I think she might be interested in where you're going for the next 6 days."

"I doubt it," Donna said. "She doesn't seem to care about anything anymore except her work."

"Come on," Taylor said. "You know that's not true. Just talk to her. I'm sure she'll listen."

"Maybe," Donna said. "I'll ask her though."

"Okay good," Taylor said. Donna yawned and rubbed her eyes.

"You tired?" Taylor asked, after hearing her yawn.

"Yeah," Donna said. "I didn't get much sleep last night. I kept having this dream over and over again."

"What dream?" Taylor asked.

"Well, I'm on a plane, just walking around, and I'm the only one around. Then, a fireball comes out of nowhere, and it's heading right towards me, and...it's really scary. It's been three weeks, and I'm still having that dream."

"You going to be okay?" Taylor asked. "You know, flying to Las Vegas?"

"Oh sure," Donna said. "I'll be fine. But right now, I think I'm going back to bed."

"Okay then," Taylor said. "I won't call you until later then."

"Thanks," Donna said.

"And don't forget to pack," Taylor reminded her. "I'll talk to you later, okay?"

"Okay," Donna said.

"And try not to think about planes or anything like that, okay?"

"I won't," Donna assured him.

"Okay, I love you," Taylor said.

"Love you too," Donna said with a smile. "Bye."

She hung up the phone, and turned off the ringer. She walked over to her door and switched off the light. Donna walked back over to her bed, closed the blinds so her room was dark, and got into her bed, pulling the covers up to her chin. She tried to think about how great it would be the next day in Las Vegas, and tried to keep her mind off of planes, and Lindsay.
