Chapter 36 of "Some Changes Are Good"

Donna walked into the bathroom and examined her face. She groaned when she saw the bruise next to her eye. She walked out of the bathroom and downstairs. She met Taylor outside the front door.

"Hey Tay," she said as she walked outside.

"Hi Donna," Taylor said as they began walking down the driveway. "So where are your parents?" Taylor asked.

"They're both on business trips. They won't be back until later this week," Donna replied.

"Oh," Tay said. "How's Josh?" Donna paused for a second.

"Fine. Josh is fine," she said, her voice breaking. She put her face in her hands. Taylor saw her shoulders begin to shake. He put his arms around her and let her cry on his shoulder.

Donna cried for a good 10 minutes before she finally calmed down. He sat down on the curb with her. Donna wiped her eyes and stared into space.

"Taylor?" she asked as she turned to him. "If I tell you something, will you promise never to tell anyone?" Taylor nodded solemnly. "It's Josh. He's been...abusing me. Physically," Donna choked out. She broke down into tears again. Taylor comforted her as she cried.

"Donna?" he said when she had calmed down. "I need to tell you something."

"What is it Tay?" Donna asked in a concerned voice.

"Well, I like you Donna. I like you a lot. I wanted to tell you sooner, but Josh showed up. And besides, I thought you would laugh at me. So there you go." Taylor turned away. Donna thought for a few minutes.

"Taylor I would never laugh at you. You should know that. And as a matter of fact, I feel the same way about you. I like you a lot. More than a friend," she said in a serious voice.

"Really?" Taylor asked. Donna nodded. "But what about Josh?" Taylor asked. Donna laughed.

"I dumped his sorry ass. No one messes with me," she said. Taylor laughed. He and Donna got up.

"So now what?" Taylor asked.

"Well, can we be going out, and still be friends at the same time?" Donna asked as they began walking home. Taylor shrugged.

"I guess so," he said as they approached their houses.

"Cool," Donna said as she and Taylor walked up Donna's driveway.

"Well," Taylor began. "I'll call you tomorrow." Donna nodded.

"Goodnight Tay," she said as she opened the door. "And Taylor?" Tay turned around.

"Yeah?" he asked.

"Thanks," Donna said with a smile. Taylor smiled back.

"Anytime Donna," he said. "Anytime."
